PCI: DSS Petition

Geek, Work 4 Comments

Working on PCI: DSS at work atm, and I getting frustrated with the wishy-washy statements from our QSA and the PCI Council, that really don’t help me in convincing the exec that we need to take this seriously. They are under the impression that the PCI Council don’t really have any ‘teeth’ and so can’t really justify the spend to become PCI compliant, and in a way I agree.

So I decided to submit a petition on the petition website to ask that the government make it a legal requirement that companies become PCI compliant.

I don’t know if it will do anything but its worth a go, so when it gets approved and I get the URL, I will let you know what it is so you can sign it

SL PADI

Second Life 1 Comment

It seems that PADI (the Scuba Diving certification company) have setup something in SL, from the looks of it, its about e-learning. As someone who is Open Water Certified, I know there is quite a bit of classroom work to be done before you even get in the water, so I can see how SL could help here.

What is strange is that they seem to have setup right next to virtual Manchester of all places!!

Here are some snaps..

Fathers Day No 1

Family No Comments

So yesterday was quite a milestone for me, my first Fathers Day. Intellectually, I know its just a load of marketing hype to drum up business for industry, but being my first one it still gave me the warm fuzzies and it was a bit special.

I got a nice bag of gifts (Socks, Ties, Chocolate, Book Voucher) from Niamh and Julie and a card that I will keep for posterities sake. I also rang my Dad and was able to wish him happy Fathers Day and him to do the same for me!

My Networking Fetish

Geek, Second Life No Comments

So at a ‘geek meet’ in SL tonight and I thought that I would have a look at what sort of network trafic that SL creates. And so here it is….

It show’s me and my SL client, and also a program called ‘EtherApe’ that shows all network connections. So it appears that for SL there is one connection to util.agni.secondlife.com and another connection to .agni.secondlife.com, where is something like sim1234. The port it uses is some UDP port, didn’t get that info at the time.

And trafic increases when ‘rezzing’ is going on.

Interesting….

Today I saw a cracking film, it was the 20 week, ultrasound scan of Julie and my firstborn, due in October. It was the most gripping 15 minute film I have ever seen!

Asus have announced a new tiny PC (7″ Screen), ultraportable thingy. It apparently can run Windows XP or Linux. They are calling it the Eee PC.

Do you Twitter?

Geek No Comments

Sitting next to an avid twitter’er I have given in and signed up myself.

For those that don’t know twitter is a website that allows you to create a sort of ‘micro-blog‘, in which you can post what you like. Each post is restricted to 140 characters, and you can post via SMS, IM (various ones supported), or the web.

There is also a bunch of other ways to post such as a fabulous Firefox plugin called TwitBin.

I have also integrated Twitter into my blog using the Twitter WordPress Sidebar Widget.
